How to Get an Accurate Junk Removal Quote the First Time

Nearly every price change on arrival traces back to one of four omissions. Cover them and the number you are quoted is the number you pay.
- Show everything, including the parts you would rather not
- Describe the access honestly
- Flag the special items
- Identify anything hazardous
- Ask the right three questions back
Show everything, including the parts you would rather not
The garage, the shed, the attic, the side yard, the storage unit, behind the fence. The most common cause of a revised quote is material that was not shown. Companies are not annoyed by a big job — they are annoyed by a job that turns out to be twice what they scheduled, because the crew and truck were sized for the smaller version and now the day is broken.
Describe the access honestly
Floor level and whether there is an elevator. Stairs and how many flights. Distance from the door to where a truck can park. Gate codes, guard houses and HOA restrictions. Narrow driveways and low-hanging branches. Whether the freight elevator needs a reservation. Access is the largest labor variable in the entire quote and it is invisible in photos.
Flag the special items
Pianos, safes, gun safes, hot tubs, pool tables, treadmills, riding mowers, appliances containing refrigerant, mattresses, tires, televisions and electronics, and anything unusually heavy. Several of these carry disposal surcharges and several require additional crew. Mentioning them in advance costs nothing; discovering them changes the crew size needed and therefore the price.
Identify anything hazardous
Paint, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides, fuel, propane cylinders, batteries, ammunition and medical waste cannot go on a standard truck. A good company will tell you where each goes — usually your county's household hazardous waste program, which is generally free. What nobody can do is take them anyway, so surfacing them early prevents an awkward conversation and a partially completed job.
Ask the right three questions back
Is disposal included in this price? Is this a flat price or an estimate that can change? Are you licensed and insured, and can you provide a certificate? Those three answers tell you almost everything about what kind of company you are dealing with, and the answers take under a minute to get.
A practical way to think about it
One more practical note about doing this in Florida specifically: work early. Garages, attics, sheds, storage units and unconditioned spaces become genuinely dangerous by mid-morning for much of the year, and heat illness during self-directed cleanout projects sends people to emergency rooms every summer. Start at seven, stop by eleven, drink more water than feels necessary, and never do heavy lifting alone. A crew works in rotation with hydration built into the schedule for exactly this reason.
Why this plays out differently in Florida
Florida's junk removal market has a wide price spread, and a lot of that spread comes down to whether a company quotes the whole job or quotes a starting point and grows it. It is one of several reasons we tell people not to copy a cleanout plan they read on a national blog and assume it transfers here. Local disposal rules, humidity, HOA structures and hurricane season all bend the timeline.
If you want the specifics for your area, our Lauderdale-By-The-Sea service page and Glen Ridge service page cover local scheduling, and the statewide service area index lists every Florida county we cover.
The honest bottom line
Whatever you decide, decide early. Almost every expensive cleanout mistake we see started as a reasonable decision to wait a couple more weeks.
